Summer "Break"
Summer is well underway. It is hard to believe we are barrelling toward July with all the aggression and heat of a sweaty, disgustingly narrow spin seat.
As kids, summer was a magical time.
As an adult, summer means wearing fewer clothes and, if you have kids, trying to figure out what to do with them.
But does anyone remember returning from school after the summer break and having to either write about or proclaim what they did over the break in front of the class?
There was always an unspoken shame when someone had nothing exciting to report, so you tried to spice it up as much as possible.
Does anyone still feel that same pressure as an adult? To have something exciting to report.
Can we normalize, proudly reporting that we did absolutely nothing?
What did you do this summer?
Not a damn thing.
I stayed out of the heat.
I managed to make it to work every day.
I drank outside as much as possible.
I bathed regularly.
I binge-watched my comfort shows.
I napped every opportunity I got.
I kept my kids alive and fed.
I hydrated.
So this summer I'd like to invite you to take a break from the "break." Enjoy doing nothing. Enjoy getting as much rest as possible. Refrain from feeling the pressure to have something to report. Enjoy not entertaining your kids and let them use their imagination—it builds character.
