The Best Advice
Graduation season is upon us, and even though we aren't technically graduating, a good commencement speech has the ability to offer us some of the best advice about courage, identity, purpose, and the meaning of life. And why is it that almost every graduation ceremony ever featured on a show makes us cry? Is it the youthful idealism, the potential awaiting these graduates, or maybe that no matter where we are at in life it's not too late for us either? Here's a few of the best speeches/life advice given at a graduation that's worth reading whether or not you are about to put on a cap and gown. Just be sure to get those tissues ready just in case...
Oprah Class of 2020 (virtual speech): "What will your essential service be? What really matters to you? How will you use what matters in service to yourself, your community, and the world?"
Nora Ephron: Wellesley College, 1996: "What are you going to do? Everything is my guess. It will be a little messy but embrace the mess. It will be complicated but rejoice in the complications. It will not be anything like what you think it's going to be like, but surprises are good for you. And don't be frightened. You can always change your mind."
Toni Morrison: Wellesley College, 2004: "What is now known is not all that you are capable of knowing. You are your own stories and therefore free to imagine and experience what it means to be human without wealth. What it feels like to be human without domination over others, without reckless arrogance, without fear of others unlike you, without rotating, rehearsing and reinventing the hatreds you learned in the sandbox. And although you don't have complete control over the narrative (no author does, I can tell you), you could nevertheless create it."
